Fire Units respond to fire at abandoned Asylum

Laurel, Maryland (Arundel News Network) – Just after 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday the Anne Arundel County Fire Department responded to the area of First Street near Forest Haven Avenue in Laurel for a reporting building fire.

A NBC News 4 helicopter notified Anne Arundel County Fire Department of flames coming form a building on the grounds of an abandoned Forest Haven Asylum. Arriving firefighters identified the structure as the abandoned girl’s detection center. A fire in one room was located and extinguished without extension to adjoining rooms. A search of the entire building was conducted by firefighters to ensure there were no occupants.

The District of Columbia Fire and EMS Department was notified and assisted on scene. a Fire investigator from the District of Columbia Fire Department responded to the scene. the DC Fire and EMS Department are still investigating the fire and no preliminary cause has been identified. The estimated dollar loss of the fire also has not been identified.

A total of 34 firefighters responded to the scene and it took them about 30 minutes to place the fire under control.
