Handgun recovered at The Phoenix Academy

Annapolis, Maryland (Arundel News Network) – On March 1st around 12 p.m., a school resource officer (SRO) met with a staff member at The Phoenix Academy who discovered a purse-type bag containing a handgun. The bag was left in a classroom.

The SRO opened the bag to determine its owner and located a .22 caliber revolver handgun. The owner of the bag was identified as Dea’Montae Qua’zae Elgin, a 19-year-old from the 900 block of President Street in Annapolis.

Mr. Elgin was arrested and will be charged with handgun related charges. There are no indications that any other student observed the handgun or was threatened in any way.

According to court records, Mr. Elgin has a bail hearing scheduled for Monday. The full list of charges are below:

  • Dangerous Weapon on School Property (Misdemeanor)
  • Handgun on person (Misdemeanor)
  • Loaded handgun on person (Misdemeanor
  • Possession of a firearm by a minor (Misdemeanor)
